چکیده

Analytic approximations for synchrotron, synchrotron self-Compton (SSC), and external Compton (EC) processes are used to constrain model parameters for knot and hot-spot emission in extended jets of radio galaxies. Equipartition formulas are derived that relate the Doppler factor δ and comoving magnetic field B assuming a nonthermal synchrotron origin of the radio emission, and synchrotron, SSC and EC origins of the X-ray emission. Expressions are also derived for δ and B that minimize the total jet powers of the emitting region in synchrotron, SSC and EC models for the X-ray emission. The results are applied to knot WK7.8 of PKS 0637-752. Predictions to test two-component synchrotron and EC models are made for Chandra and GLAST. Subject headings: galaxies: jets — radiation processes: nonthermal — X-rays: galaxies

Synchrotron vs Compton Interpretations for Extended X-ray Jets

A widely discussed explanation for the origin of the X-ray emission observed from knots in extended quasar jets with the Chandra X-ray Obseratory is Compton-scattered CMBR by electrons with Lorentz factors γ ∼ 10. This model faces difficulties in terms of total energy requirements, and in explaining the spatial profiles of the radio, optical, and X-ray knots in sources such as PKS 0637-752, 3C ...

Ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) accelerated in the jets of active galactic nuclei can accumulate in high magnetic field, ∼ 100 kpc-scale regions surrounding powerful radio galaxies. Photohadronic processes make ultra-relativistic electrons and positrons that initiate electromagnetic cascades, leading to the production of a γ-ray synchrotron halo. We calculate the halo emission in the cas...

Nonthermal Γ-ray and X-ray Flashes from Shock Breakout in Gamma-ray Bursts/supernovae

Thermal X-ray emission which is simultaneous with the prompt gamma-rays has been detected for the first time from a supernova connected with a gamma-ray burst (GRB), namely GRB060218/SN2006aj. It has been interpreted as arising from the breakout of a mildly relativistic, radiation-dominated shock from a dense stellar wind surrounding the progenitor star. There is also evidence for the presence ...

On Pair Content and Variability of Sub-Parsec Jets in Quasars

X–ray observations of blazars associated with the OVV (Optically Violently Variable) quasars put strong constraints on the ee pair content of radio-loud quasar jets. From those observations, we infer that jets in quasars contain many more ee pairs than protons, but dynamically are still dominated by protons. In particular, we show that pure ee jet models can be excluded, as they overpredict sof...

Radio/x-ray Offsets of Large Scale Jets Caused by Synchrotron Time Lags

In the internal shock scenario, we argue that electrons in most kpc (or even larger) scale jets can be accelerated to energies high enough to emit synchrotron X-rays, if shocks exist on these scales. These high energy electrons emit synchrotron radiation at high frequencies and cool as they propagate downstream along the jet, emitting at progressively lower frequencies and resulting in time lag...
